i'm about to set up a domain at home. my wife's PC has a million things in
her curent local profile. i know i can copy the contents of her profile to
her new domain profile, but is there some sort of hack that could just
convert her current profile to the domain profile? the reason i ask is cuz
i've seen unexpected things happen from merely copying profile-to-profile and
wanted to avoid that. thanks.

Well it's pretty simple and doesn't involve any hacking. Set up your domain.
Add your user to the domain. Log in as the user on the client to build their
new domain profile. Log off as the user. Log back in as an admin on the
client. Go to Control Panel|System|User Profiles, select the user profile,
Copy To, Browse to %systemdrive%\Documents and
Settings\userprofile.domainname
Change "Permitted to use:" to "userprofile.domainname" OK.

Here is information on doing that from MVP Torgeir Bakken:

Copy local (Workgroup) profile to Domain profile from Torgeir Bakken:

Torgeir:

We solve this by (in the registry) changing the profile path for the new
user to point to the old user's profile folder (the user needs to log
on at least once first).

If the user is not a local admin, you might need to to something on the
permission side. Use tip 4631 and 2240 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at
http://www.jsiinc.com as a guide.

I actually posted this same questions a few weeks ago but never got a
response. Glad you posted it and thanks to beb & Malke for the replies.
Going to try it over the weekend.
(no one seems to answer my posts, have I done somthing)?

Since Roaming Profiles can only be implemented via Group Policy Objects
(GPO) in a Windows Server environment, questions about roaming profiles have
a greater chance of being answered if one posts to a newsgroup where GPO
gurus hang out:
microsoft.public.windows.group_policy

Whether or not one receives a response to a question posted to an incorrect
newsgroup is unrelated to the personality of the person asking the question.
Responsiveness, rather, depends upon the following formula:
[(Presidential Approval Rating) / (Phase of the Moon)] / [(Total Number of
MVPs) / {(Number of MVPs in a good mood) x (Day of the Week)}]
