Moving info from Outlook 2002 XP to Vista

I'd like some help moving my e-mails, contacts, messages and calendar from
Outlook 2002 on my old PC (XP) to my new PC (Vista). My new PC does not have
Office.

A post I found on here about it!

It's supposed to be a Help your Neighbor type of thing, with a rather
loose definition of neighbors, but most of the people who respond that
way insist that it take place in the newsgroup instead of by email. Also,
don't be surprised if a Help your Neighbor response isn't until the next
day.

To transfer from Outlook under XP to Windows Mail under Vista,
you have two choices:

1. Install Outlook, preferably version 2003 or later, on your Vista
Machine. Versions 2000 and 2002 will also run under Vista, but
with some problems. Windows Mail needs to use a part of Outlook
with MAPI in its name to be able to import the .pst files Outlook
stores nearly everything in. Some, but not all, versions of Microsoft
Office include Outlook. A free trial version should run more than
long enough to be used in this transfer.

2. On an XP machine with both Outlook Express and Outlook
installed, first import the .pst file into Outlook Express. Then
transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Mail.

Bring along the .wab file if you want your old contacts. Copy
the transferred files to a directory on the hard drive of your
Vista computer first. A directory you create for this purpose
under your Documents directory is a good choice. Make sure
the copied files are all read-write instead of readonly before
you tell Windows Mail to import the entire directory containing
them. If this does not import the old contacts, start Windows
Mail, then click on Tools, then Windows Contacts, then Import,
then Windows Address Book File (Outlook Express contacts),
then Import, then find the .wab file and click on it, then Close,
then close the contacts window. Don't expect this to transfer
any contact groups correctly, only the contacts inside and outside
these groups.

If anything else fails to transfer correctly, give us more details on
exactly what.

Outlook Calendar data cannot be transferred to Windows Calendar. You can,
of course, use Outlook (2003 or 2007) on Vista and make use of all your old
data.

What if you only have outlook and NO outlook Express...how then do you
transfer your personal folders and the sub folders to Vista 32bit
windows mail?

Install Outlook 2002 and it's PST file and then you can import them into
WinMail.

ALL versions of Windows released since 1998 have Outlook Express.

Except Vista.

So, another option would be to import Outlook emails into Outlook Express
on your old computer. Then transfer the OE .dbx files to the new computer
and import those. That would save you from having to install Outlook on the
new computer.

So, what does one do to import a data file from Office Outlook 7 or Outlook
Express into Vista Windows Mail? I have a .pst file from Outlook export and
a bunch of .dbx files from moving the data into Express and then exporting.
Vista Windows Mail won't accept either type. I won't network into my old
computer because it's infected with a virus.

I have tried this without success. Exactly what set of Mail menu/dialog
steps will accomplish import? I think I have tried them all.

The URL Frank gave you covers most of the process except for importing
the Outlook messages into OE. I no longer have an XP computer so I can't
give you the exact steps, but I think it would be as simple as opening OE
and doing a File, Import, Messages...

Hi Gary. Thanks for the response. I wasn't clear in my statement about
having "tried them all." My problem is with importing Outlook Express files
into Vista Mail.

Yikes. Looks like there are definite issues in trying to import OE dbx files
onto Vista.

Perhaps having a dual partition or blowing up Vista altogether is another
solution. The only problem with that is that Microsoft has intimidated the
prefab manufacturers like Dell and HP in not providing XP drivers for their
new PC's.

Although MS may discourage the PC vendors from offering Windows XP,
that is not the reason for the lack of drivers. It is expensive to develop
new drivers for a new chipset. So, the PC vendors don't want to pay the
developers twice in order to get two different sets of drivers (Vista *and* XP).

When the instructions are followed, there is no problem with importing
OE dbx files into Windows Mail.
