moving HD to another computer

Six months ago, I unplugged one of my computers. Now, after I plug it in
and push the button, nothing happens.

I'm thinking of moving the HD (with XP Pro on it) to another computer.
What should I expect? I heard that Microsoft has some kind of
anti-piracy scheme that would prevent Windows from booting up if the
motherboard is changed. Is that true? Thanks.

It's very likely that you couldn't boot, but that has nothing to do with
anti-piracy scheme...

Quite simple, if you don't have the exactly same chipset on the other
computer, you can't boot... Prepare to install WinXP from scratch...

It will either work fine or you may have to do a repair install using the XP CD
before it will boot if the chipsets on the two motherboards are different enough.

Nope. You may have to do a manual authorization after a
repair install, but MS will be happy to do that in your situation.

You dont have to do that, a repair install will fix the
failure to boot and you wont lose any files or settings.

Only if you have an authentic MS$ install disk,

Doesnt have to be authentic, a copy of one will work fine.
this will offer a repair option. If the HD you are moving
to another box is from a Dell, HP, or other system with
a customised recovery disk, then it'll throw a fit and start
asking for an MS$ install disk with a drivers.cab, etc.
Back up any valuable data for starters, you may be in for a bumpy ride.

Or its much more likely to work fine.

Right. And then, you get a telegram saying that Billy G has died, and
has left you his entire fortune.

And then you wake up. 8(

Never ever could bullshit its way out of a wet paper bag.
