I have a emachine computer my motherboard went out so instead of replacing i
was given a dell computer i want to put my 80 gig hd in the place of the 20
gig hd thats in the dell and use it can anyone help with what i need to do i
plugged the 80 hd drive in the dell it would not run windows

Maybe invest some effort first, to show that you appreciate being
helped? Most important is a description of the problem...

What exactly happens ?

When you put a bootable drive in a different system, you normally
have to do a repair install with XP before it will boot. You boot the
XP CD, operate as if you are going to do a clean install, and tell it
to install where XP already is on that hard drive. Dont format the
partition. The install should say that its found an existing install and
offer to repair that. Agree to that and it should fix the problem.

im so sorry about being so computer iliterate im just learning these things
i want to put my old hard drive in the dell computer that was givin to me
were do i get xp cd the only disc i have is a restore cd for windows os that
came with my emachine computer i thank you for helping,, sean

No problem, everyone had to learn it sometime.

I dont usually try to cover all the bases, makes the post too long to read.

Yeah, you cant do a repair install using those.

And you cant usually do a restore either, most of those
check that its restoring to the original PC, so you cant
just restore to more than the PC it was bought with.

I'd personally use a pirate copy of XP in that situation,
because you did pay for the original copy of XP. Not
strictly legal, but you may or may not care about that.

XP isnt all that expensive now, so you could just buy a copy.
