I'm about to assist someone who has an old W/95 machine (with no
ethernet card) and has just bought a shiny new XP machine. I'm faced
with how get files moved. I doubt if she has a lot, no digipics or
MP3s. Just mail and docs.

The old machine does not have ethernet, and if the hardware has USB
jacks I don't know if USB1.1 will work. I don't want to get involved
with adding windows 9x protcols. I never did figure that sh*t out.

My first shot is to ZIP up all her files, diel into the internet and
FTP them up up to a server where I have lots of space.

Plan B is to yank the disk out of the old machine, plug it into
the IDE secondary and copy all the files.

I see I can buy the kind of serial-parallel cables PC/Anywhere uses
for file transfer for a few bucks. If I buy one of these, what
software can I use with it (95-to-XP) ? PCanywhare has gone way
beyond file transfer and is too expensive. What else is there ?

Thanks

W95 doesn't support USB.

Your easiest and least expensive option is the slave the old
drive and copy the files. It will be faster and the only
cost will be a few minutes while you check that the jumpers
are set properly.

Once the drive is mounted, the BIOS should detect it (some
BIOS may be set to see only one hard drive, you can change
that), Windows will assign a drive letter. XPs file and
settings transfer wizard will handle most of the work. If
you don't need the old computer running for a while, just
leave the old drive in place until you're sure all the
needed files are copied. The drive can then be either
formatted and put back in the old computer before you
dispose of it by donation or sale or the drive can be left
installed and used for backups.

Hint: yank the CD drive and use that cable for the old drive. That
way you don't have to mess with the jumpers on either disk. (this is
of course for ageneric PC with the C drive as master on the first
channel and the CD drive as the master on the second channel.)
