Why does my cursor appear to have a mind of its own and pop up in unlikely
places throughout the text as I'm typing? OK, I might not have the cleanest
keystroke action in the world, and I may be inadvertently hitting other keys,
but we're talking laptop here and big fingers... so what settings can I
adjust to avoid the cursor jumping all over the page?

Keep your hands away from the over sensitive touch pad; and or turn off the
microphone.

You'll need to consult your laptop manufacturer about how to turn off the
touch pad and microphone - often by a setting in the BIOS. Use some other
type of pointing device.
