Moving Boot.ini.

I have 2 hard drives, 40G (Primary, C:\ ) and 20G (E:\) running XP Home.
Because my system was becoming unstable, I re-installed XP Home on the
second drive E as a dual-booted system, so that I could carry on with my
urgent course work.
I have now deleted the O/S from the C Drive, just leaving Boot.ini,
NTDETECT.com and ntldr so that I can boot up. (I have modified boot.ini to
boot directly into O/S on E.)
I would now like to have the system and boot on the same C Drive. If I
copied over a DriveImage of XP on E to C and then added the 3 boot files,
(editing boot.ini), would running Repair, fixmbr, fixboot give me a working
O/S on C Drive again please?

Thanks in anticipation,
Zarafet

You would have to adjust the lines in boot.ini so as to reflect the
different physical drive connection - probably from
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
or
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
to
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

And once booted, it will be in internal confusion over where things are
- run regedit.exe and at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Mounted Devices
delete the lines in the right pane and then reboot for PnP enumeration
to sort them out again. It will then say that new hardware has been
installed and ask to reboot once more
