Moviemaker crapping out

Guest

I don't have version 2.1 since I did download the XP, Service Pack 2, but it
doesn't download Moviemaker 2.1 (Like it says it does).

I imported a pretty big video file (over 300 MB) and everytime i even click
on a video in that collection, moviemaker craps out. I only need to save a
couple of minutes from this 43 minute file, but I can't get moviemaker to
stay open long enuf to make this happen.

Any suggestions?

BTW--it is an avi file that I had moviemaker section into clips while it
imported. It imported okay, but if I go to that collection at all,
Moviemaker is toast.

I tried to do the windows update thing and everything updated but my windows
moviemaker did not update.

Is moviemaker just too crappy to handle an avi file of this size?

Probably a codec issue...see my
answer to your followup question.

Maybe you need a codec for the .avi file...

GSpot can tell you which codec was used
and if the codec is installed on your system.

300mb is a very very small video file.
43 minutes is a very very long video file.
I suspect it is something like divx, which won't work with MM.

and here to correct the problem of MM2.1 not installing properly when you
install SP2.

So even if it is an AVI file, that doesn't mean the codecs downloaded?

When I first imported it, it played for about 2 seconds b4 crashing and now
if I load the collection at all, moviemaker crashes.

It isn't about the codec's if it is, and I suspect Graham is 100% correct on
this, a Divx file then it will not work properly in Movie Maker. Convert the
file to WMV and import the WMV into Movie Maker and that will likely solve
the problem.

hi julie
graham is probably right, u can use windows media encoder 9 (free) from
microsoft website to convert. also make sure ur computer is powerful enough
to edit the video. i recommend a 2.6ghz Pentium 4 processor or an 2ghz AMD
processor. alternatively if u have a core 2 duo processor or AMD athlon 64 X2
they should be fine for video editing. i recommend 768mb of RAM for video
editing, 1gb if you don't have a dedicated graphics cards.

hope this helps.

I downloaded the Canopus DV File Converter from the site Graham told me about.

I chose my avi file and I got this message, "The source file can not be
converted by this application."

Any other suggestions?

I am running movie maker version 2.0.3312.0.

I have installed Service Pack 2 of Windows and it does not upgrade my movie
maker to version 2.1.

Does this mean I have to uninstall movie maker altogether before running the
sp2 upgrade?

no, there isn't a way to do an uninstall first.... if the full install of
SP2 doesn't result in MM2.1, check my website's Setup MM2 in XP > MM2.1 page
