movie thumbnails

Thank goodness for System Restore.

I got a new DVD burner that came with Nero 7 OEM. It automatically
uninstalled Nero 6 OEM and I lost mpeg2 encoding so I uninstalled Nero 7 and
went back to Nero 6. Somehow in all this I lost movie thumbnails so I used
System Restore to go back to before the Nero fiasco.

The question is, Why would Nero install/uninstall/install cause XP to lose
thumbnail views of movies? Was there another solution besides a Restore? I
searched the Knowledge Base.

I would cheerfully do without Nero but my longtime favorite, RecordNow Max,
doesn't recognize the new DVD burner.

Frankly, Nero 7 has been a mess. In addition to being different from
version 6, it actually has different versions which place important files
into different directories. Thus, 7.1 might place something in the program
files\nero while 7.3 places it in program files\common files\ahead.

The only way to deal with that is to do a full uninstall and then use the
Nero software cleaner (you can download it from the Nero site). Note the
cleaner must be used BEFORE you reboot.

Good luck

Type or paste the following line into the Start | Run box and click OK...

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

You should see a message telling if it registered or not.

Shmedia.dll is the Media File Property Extractor Shell Extension and it
needs to be reregistered in the registry.

Thank you, Wes, but I had already tried this before I used System Restore.
I should have mentioned that.

I seem to remember I had Nero 6 working on Monday. I spent all day
yesterday uninstalling and running Nero cleanup because it was crashing. I
finally got it working, and I still have video thumbnails.

Wes, I've just now noticed the strangest thing. I was running ME, scanning
rebate submissions, saving to My Documents. In Details view, instead of an
icon for a program that opens the pictures, I get tiny thumbnails of the
images! I've never noticed this before, didn't even know it was a
possibility. The scans are .xif, which open in Pagis Editor.
