Another good one is to disable your screensaver.
If the screensaver comes up while a movie is rendering it will slow the
process a lot and can sometimes cause audio "hiccups" within the finished
movie.
If I open Task Manager and "end" the large programmes that running, will that
help

Probably depending on what program(s) are running.
But are you talking about under the "Applications" tab of the Windows Task
Manager or the "Processes" tab. Either may help but you want to be careful
which processes you disable under the processes tab.
