Moved entry from All Programs. HELP!

P

peggy

Hi,
I accidently moved an entry from the All Programs menu and I don't know how
to get it back! Now when I go to the QuickBooks folder it just says empty.
My intention was just put a shortcut on my desktop but instead I guess I
moved it out of the folder. How do I get it back? When I tried to drag it
back into the All Programs it just pinned it to the start menu at the top.
I want it back in the All Programs folder. What do I do now?
TIA

Left click on the quickbook icon on your desktop (DO NOT LET GO), drag it to
the Windows Start ORB, DO NOT LET GO, when the Start Menu opens, mouse over
the ALL PROGRAMS entry (STILL DO NOT LET GO), mouse over the QUICKBOOKS
folder icon, STILL DO NOT LET GO, move your cursor down into the folder
until you see a horizontal line...place the line where you want the icon.

Let go

Drag it nice and easy, first from the desktop to the Start button (wait for
the menu to open), then to All Programs (again wait), the desired folder and
finally position it where you want it in that folder, and let the mouse
button go.

Or just copy the shortcut to this folder:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\QuickBooks

right click on the start BUTTON, select EXPLORE
windows explorer will open and you can navigate the the folder that had
that icon in it...

and copy that shortcut ONCE in the folder you want (right click> copy,
right click >paste)

THEN

right click on the start BUTTON, and select EXPLORER ALL USERS and copy
that shortcut once more (right click> copy, right click >paste)

tell me if this helps

Open the Start menu, right-click "All Programs", select "Open", and then
double-click "Programs". If you don't see the QuickBooks folder there, open
the Start menu again, right-click "All Programs" and now click "Open All
Users".

But the icon is not on the desktop. That's the problem.
It's pinned to the start menu at the upper most top box.
It won't budge and I can't drag it anywhere. Not back to the desktop or
back in the correct folder.

It's not on the desktop. See my reply to gerryf.
When I try to drag it off the top box on the start menu (pinned) I get an
error saying it can't do it because the disk is full.

NO GO!
The QuickBooks folder in All Users in empty as well.
This is weird.
What will happen if I select "unpin" from the Start Menu"?
I'm afraid to try that.

OH GREAT!
Now when I click on the pinned icon at the top I get an error saying
something like "The item is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed
or removed." Now I can't start QuickBooks at all!

Peggy, you have to find the original exe program thats in the
c:/program files folder.. find the main exe of that quick books and
right click on it, SEND TO > DESKTOP AS SHORTCUT then do all the
stuff we said.. all methods work

I couldn't find the original .exe even looking in the All Users. Somehow it
deleted it or wouldn't let me drag it off from where it was.
Thanks for trying to help.
I just broke down and re-installed QuickBooks and everything is back now
thank GAWD!
SHEESH!
EVERYONE...don't ever drag an icon from the All Programs menu!
Thanks all for trying to help.
All is ok now.

Right-click the icon in the Start Menu, and select Sent to > Desktop. From
there you can do the drag-and-drop operation over again. You can also delete
the icon with the right-click context menu.

If all else fails, you can create a new shortcut and either drag it to the
desired folder, or copy it straight into the folder I specified in my
previous post. The program (.exe) you create the shortcut to, is located in
C:\ProgramFiles\<thequickbooksfolder>.

Thanks Charlie but as I stated previously, none of the normal functions,i.e.
drag, copy, paste, right click, sendto etc. would work. It kept giving error
messages.

Have you tried to edit the Start Menu by accessing it's folders directly? In
Explorer, take a look in these two folders:

Your personal Start Menu entries:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

Global Start Menu entries:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
(you need to run as administrator in order to edit this folder)

In rare cases in Vista, icons remain on the desktop/in menues after they
have been deleted, and you can not delete them again. Rebooting takes care
of the problem, they are gone the next time you log on.
