Move flag column

Is there no way in Outlook 2003 to place the flag column to the far left?
I tried several things, including one dialog where you specify the order
they are to be displayed--custom view I think. But it is ignored.

Use the Field Chooser to remove the column altogether then add it back in
where you want it.

I have tried everything believe it or not and non of the obvious ways seemed
to work.
