Recently Windows did a standard update on my computer. I was not aware of
this until I came back to my computer in the morning to find it had
restarted.

Now all of a sudden, I am having an issue with Microsoft Word 2007 program.
I can't open any document by itself - when double clicked it merely opens up
Word. From there, I have to go and Open the program from the Recent list or
what not. When I attempt to close Word, I continuously get an error saying
that it has a problem, closes the program, reopens it, and I'm back at square
one. Once I close it again, it says there is a problem and closes the
program.

I am also having an issue with the mouse. I do have a Microsoft mouse, so I
would only assume that such a mouse is not the issue. I can navigate through
the Ribbon Menu, but I can't 'click' anywhere on the document to put the
cursor where I want it to go. If there is a mis-spelled word, I can't right
click over the word to get suggested spellings. I can't even get it to
scroll down by the scroll arrows in Word. I have to use all keypad shortcuts
in order to navigate around my document. What did you guys do!?!!? What
update did you send out to destroy such a perfectly good working system!

In an attempt to fix this, I performed a System Restore back ONE day from
the date of the update. Nothing changed.
I plan to see if I can Repair the product from the Uninstall screen to see
if that will fix anything as well.

I would greatly appreciate any advice that you can give me in answering this
issue.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=940791 and click the FixIt
button, then follow the instructions. That should do it.

The problem seems to be corruption of a particular registry entry when
Word is open during an update. The button will delete the corrupted
entry, and then restarting Word will build a new entry from the
factory settings in the program.

While Jay has the fix, change your automatic update settings so that it
doesn't automatically update without your consent and avoid the problem in
future. Instead let it warn you when there are updates to download or
install, so you can pick a more convenient time to install them.

I had exactly this experience today after last night's automatic
update -- a week and a half later. I remembered that this problem had
been addressed and searched the solution.

The Fixit Button first downloaded and installed a little application
-- does that mean that the next time something like this happens, it
will fix itself automatically?

I wanted to know what had been done in last night's automatic update.
Usually a window pops up on the desktop telling me I can look there
for details, but I didn't see one today, so I went to the Windows
Update line in All Programs; it doesn't have the list of what's been
done, only a short list of what's now available. It notes that I never
installed Office SP2, which was because of the problem that turned up
with it -- should I install SP2 now, plus the pair of fixes that was
needed to repair it?

It also says "Office Genuine Advantage Notifications" is "Important"
but has not hint of what it does, just a KB number without a link or
an indication of how to find the KB. For whose Advantage are these
Notifications? Is it MS gathering info on how I use Word?

I don't allow WU to run automatically; it is set to notify me of updates,
and then I can choose which ones I want to download and when I want to
install them. Office Genuine Advantage Notifications I interpret as being a
"phone home" applet that will tell me if the version of Office I'm using
*isn't* genuine. How very helpful!

FWIW, you can get information about which updates have been installed from
Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. In the System log,
you'll see entries for Windows Update Agent. The ones in category
Installation (event 19) will list the updates installed. Right-click on one
of these items and choose Properties to get a list of the updates that have
been installed.

Vista seems to be very different from XP in this area -- there's an
Event Viewer, but it doesn't have a System log, and the only "event" I
find anywhere is event 205.

Ah -- there they are. Thank you.

In Vista, go to Control Panel Security Center to see options for
updates, including viewing installed updates.  You can also open
Control Panel and type "updates" in the search box.
