Sometimes when I start the computer, running XP SP2 , my optical mouse won't
connect. I have to unplug it from the back of the hard drive, then plug it
back in. It then connects, lights up ready to use.
I have reloaded the mouse drivers.
It is more of a frustrating problem because it doesn't happen at every start
up.
Any ideas.

A little bit more information please:
Is the mouse connections to your computer (it is not called a hard drive) a USB (thin rectangular
plug) or a PS2 (1/4 inch circular) plug? If it the circular plug, never unplug it and then plug it
back in while the computer power is on.
Is this a new mouse that you got after the computer was purchased?
Do you know how to get access to the BIOS setup? Is there a message at start up to press DEL or F2
to go to System Setup?
What brand and model computer do you have?

Without more information, I am guessing it is a USB mouse and your BIOS settings are not configured
for a "Legacy USB Device". If you provide a bit more information, someone here should be able to
help you.

The mouse plug is a small rectangular plug. I know not to unplug the circular
plugs.

I have recently had a new windows program installed to replace a non genuine
one. The mouse problems have only occurred since then. I have had this
computer for approx 4 years, but has been upgraded from time to time. The
computer has been built specifically for me by someone.

I checked Device Manager and the mouse is a Microsoft Optical USB Wheel
Mouse(intellipoint)

I checked at startup and there is a screen that says F2

Don't know how to check the BIOS setup, sorry.

Not sure if that helps at all.
