Mouse scroll lock - F8 doesn't work

I have an intermittent problem with Excel and my mouse only. Frequently Excel acts as if I have scroll lock on. The only way to quit is to tab or click on another application, right click and close. When this occurred, I tried hitting F8 (even though I had no indication that EXT was highlighted...NUM and Ready are the only two things showing). No response. I read the article at http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/ghosting.txt but once I am in this scroll lock mode, no keyboard commands in Excel can save me. The only effective solution is to quit the app and reopen and only use the keyboard. It's incredibly frustrating and has been doing this for a few months now.

My mouse is not a wheel mouse but a standard two button Logitech mouse. If I switch to another application and then close Excel without saving, the state is lost. When I reopen, it’s likely that it will happen again. If I save the document when it occurs, the state appears to be saved (meaning I can't use the spreadsheet anymore).

If I just use keyboard commands, the scroll lock doesn’t occur.

Any idea on why this is occurring? (Other information, this is Office XP and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application. I have also tried rebooting which is time consuming and doesn't seem to have any impact on the problem.) Thank you in advance.

Try updating your mouse drivers.
Hard to believe that two button mouse would give a problem.

I reinstalled the mouse drivers and haven't had a problem for almost a month. But tonight as I am working on taxes, the problem is back. Any other ideas

As mentioned previously, I have

- uninstalled and reinstalled the applicatio
- tried F
- rebooting the machin

There really should not be a need to reboot, at worst
you terminate excel.exe via the Task Manager

Did you try such things as use Ctrl+Page up and
Ctrl+PageDn to go through ALL of the worksheet
tabs and back. Is that something you can do or
are you locked out.

Do you have macros -- I am suspicious of volatile
functions specifically involving properties and also
of one builtin Worksheet Function
=CELL("filename") without the reference cell. Read

as to why you would almost always need to use a reference cell
=CELL("filename",A1)

I think several people with Logitech mice have reported that
they solved their problem by installing the MS Intellipoint
mouse drivers instead of the Logitech mouse driver and
that it appeared to solve their problem. .

Hi Edmonds

I also encountered the same problem for the past 2 weeks now, I'm using Excel 2000 when that occured, i already tried updating patches from officeupdate.com but still occured everytime i click any cells in the spreadsheet, I also tried upgrading to Office XP, but the problem still the same. I'm running under Windows XP. Have you find the solutions to this. Please let me know.
