mouse pointer drifts without mouse

My mouse is drifting across my laptop screen on its on.
It can be somewhat controlled by my touch pad but not
workable.

I have tried loading Dell's updated driver. External
mouse drifts even more or sometimes does not work
period.
I spent an hour with Dell technical trying all of their
suggested fixes to no avail.

I have reloaded windows xp in repair mode but did not
work. It seemed to stop until I updated XP's critical
pack 1 but started again. I'm not sure that the
updating
is connected.

Before doing a format and reinstall I'm looking for
other
things to try. Has anyone ever seen this problem?

..Have you tried buying a new mouse? or at least swapping
it with another one.Sometimes the best fixes are also the
simplest

Cleaning would be the first answer, but both?
Try running youre anti-virus,you probably have one.
