mouse pointer drifting on it's on

My mouse is drifting across my laptop screen on its on.
It can be somewhat controlled by my touch pad but not
workable.

I have tried loading Dell's updated driver. External
mouse drifts even more or sometimes does not work period.
I spent an hour with Dell technical trying all of their
suggested fixes to no avail.

I have reloaded windows xp in repair mode but did not
work. It seemed to stop until I updated XP's critical
pack 1 but started again. I'm not sure that the updating
is connected.

Before doing a format and reinstall I'm looking for other
things to try. Has anyone ever seen this problem?

Go into the mouse properties in the control panel and turn
off "smart move" on your motion tab if you have it. Keep
smiling.

Looks like dodgy hardware, if its still in warrenty give
the support line a ring.
