Mouse Pointer Becomes 4-Way Arrow and Won't Revert

In WinXP Home SP1, my mouse pointer occasionally becomes a 4-way arrow and
will not revert to a regular pointer unless I go to the mouse properties
utility and either select another set of pointers or disable, apply, enable,
apply the shadow behind the pointer. Has anyone ever had this problem in
WinXP? What's the fix?

Logitech Mouseman Wheel - Model BD53. It's a contoured optical mouse. Best
mouse I've ever had, too. Running the Logitech mouse software version 9.76.
