My mouse sometimes moves slowly around the screen all by itself, how do
I stop this?

Check if the problem occurs with a different mouse too.

Is this a laptop? If so, yet tried disabling the touchpad?

Use caned air and blow the dust/dirt out of the optical hole in the bottom
of the mouse.

Close the window that is blowing the mouse across the mouse mat or make sure
it's on a level surface

If it's an optical mouse then put it on a non-reflective surface. That will
stop it jumping

Open Mouse in the Control Panel, select Pointer Options, and UNcheck
"Enhance pointer precision"

Thanks for that, of all the suggestions offered that's the one that worked.

Perhaps so, but I believe the real problem lies elsewhere. You made no
mention of the mouse type,
type of pad etc. etc. I've been using 'enhance pointer precision for several
years problem free.

Yep, it tends to be hardware specific. That "fix" has been used for
years. Some mice it's an issue with, others not.

But, what type of mice is it an issue with?

When I first ran into, I believe it was logitec optical mice, probably
some of the first ones. I haven't personally run into the issue more
than 3 or 4 of them in the past 10 years or so. Generally I've seen it
manifest itself as the pointer slowly creeps off the sceen to the right
or upper right. And blowing out the mouse eye switching the mouse pad or
desktop surface doesn't make a difference.

snip
My Logitec Trackmarble mouse will do this if I park the mouse pointer
too far to the right...off the screen and leave it there for a few
seconds while reading or keying something in. The pointer will crawl
up the right edge of the screen, but if I bring the pointer back a bit
from the edge this stabilizes it and it can stay there indefinitely.

This is a Windows XP Pro SP3 setup, and everything else seems to be
working as it should.
