Lately my mouse hesitates when moving it. I will be moving it, then it will
stop and then continue in a second. The final culmination of all of this (it
make take a week or so) is that the computer hangs up. Anyone familiar with
this? Do I have a virus? Any help is appreciated.

Two simple possibilities, assuming the lockup may be unrelated;

1. If it is an older mechanical mouse (with a roller ball), open the bottom
and clean the rollers inside.

2. If it is an optical mouse, try putting a different pattern surface under
it. I have trouble with mine on some woodgrain desktops. It will exhibit the
stutter you describe.

Is your pc spyware clean?

1. First, check the status of your mouse in your systems properties
to ensure that a yellow exclamation mark isn't appearing in front
of your mouse's hardware specifications:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager

2. If a mechanical mouse: open it and gently clean all of its insides and
rollers with a Q-Tip.
3. If mouse has a cord make certain your cord is snugly connected to
the mouse port on the back of your PC. (Don't overtighten.)
4. If your wireless mouse has a battery, remove its battery, reset
battery, close mouse. Many wireless batteries are exhausted
within 2-4 months due to sustained use.
5. Despite its lack of "coolness", get a good mouse pad and run
mouse on it. Many mice experience difficulty operating on
steel, wood, and plastic surfaces...especially wooden surfaces
such as a desk that has been recently polished. Even a using a
suspect mouse on a piece of white printer paper will provide
enough "traction" to help the mouse register its operations.

Good luck.
