Mouse Does Not Load in Safe Mode

I am running WindowsXP Home Edition (with Service Pack 1) on a Pentium, 233
MHz with 128 megs of ram. Whenever I boot into safe mode, the mouse does not
load and I am forced to navigate using the arrow keys. I have searched the
Microsoft Knowledge Base and have been unable to find any information that
will allow me to get my mouse to load in safe mode. Does anyone have a
suggestion as to how I can get my mouse to load? Thanks for any assistance.

Use a ps/2 mouse instead of a USB mouse.

What kind of mouse do you have? In safe mode, the system loads a
generic mouse driver which should work.

To work in Safe mode devices have to be supported by the machine's BIOS.
If this is a USB mouse this may not be the case. Check in the BIOS
setup to see if there is a Peripherals - Legacy USB support that you
can enable. Otherwise get a USB to PS/2 adapter, or PS/2 mouse, and use
that

Since my mouse works perfectly in normal mode, is it safe to assume that it
is supported my BIOS?

It is not a USB mouse.

What is a PS/2 adapter and is it something that I should look into for a
serial mouse?

Hi Bill:

Your MS serial mouse is not supported when booting to safe mode.
Suggest instead you purchase one of the many inexpensive optical mice
that are available. Logitech makes one that you can purchase for
less than $20 US. It comes either in USB (you can't use that kind)
or as PS2. Check to see if your PC has a PS2 input for a mouse or a
keyboard.

Thanks for the feedback. Although I don't understand why the serial mouse is
not supported in safemode, that makes sense as to why I have no mouse
activity in that situation. I definitely will consider getting a "PS/2"
mouse to deal with this issue. Thanks again.
