Mouse button problem

The Microsoft mouse drivers and the Logitech mouse drivers are not the same.
The buttons send different codes, even though the standard Windows driver
may work for both.

This is a rather odd problem. I reinstalled XP. I have two mice, a Logitech
cordless, and a Microsoft Intellimouse optical. I only have the MS mouse
software installed. I have it set so that the middle button closes the
currently open application. Before I reinstalled Windows, this worked with
both mice. Now, only the MS mouse middle button is detected and closes the
currently open app. The Logitech mouse middle button works, but does the
scrolling that seems to be a default.

Questions: Why are they different? How can I get the logitech mouse middle
button to act like the MS Mouse middle button - like it did before I
reinstalled Windows?

Install the Logitech software and this should restore the
functionality.

I did. Still didn't work. I'm wondering if there a compability issue in the
motherboard? All I did was changed the motherboard and reinstall Windows.
This is something that I've had working ever since XP first came out, but
for some reason the mouse center button clicks are being ignored by the
mouse software, and it tries to do the default center click scroll instead
of what the mouse software is set to do. Weird...

And another irritation - Microsoft Intellimouse uninstall does NOT remove
the files! It leaves a couple of MB of junk behind. Interesting enough, the
Logitech mouse uninstall actually removes all files and the directory too.

I did do one thing different - I installed the Intellipoint version 5, and
that version completely ignores the middle button. I had to go back to
veriosn 4.1 to get it to work - but "work" means default scroll and ignore
the mouse software settings. I'm wondering if the Intellipoint version 5
left a file behind that is causing all of these problems?

This I understand. I do not have Logitech mouse drivers installed. This
worked before I reinstalled Windows. How do I get it to work again?
