Mouse alternative

I have shoulder surgery coming up. I don't have a problem typing and
mouse-clicking with one hand, but there are times when it is necessary
to hold down a key, such as CTRL, while clicking the mouse. Is there any
keyboard alternative to this? Can a key be re-assigned to represent the
mouse button?
I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a standard keyboard, using WinXP.
Thanks.

Have a look under the Accessibility options: I know there is such a thing
as "sticky" keys, meaning you can press the CTRL, let it up, and then press
the key to go with it. Works for Shift, lots of things. I'm not real
familiar with the accessibility stuff, but it seems pretty handy.

Windows has an Accessibility Wizard that can set things up for your
needs. Check out
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > Accessibility
Wizard

There's options in "Accessibility" to help overcome these type of things.
Like "sticky keys" which act by you holding down the key for a couple of
seconds and then let go and it stays "down" so you can do for example a
Ctrl-C (Copy). Then you press it again to release it. That' features
called "Sticky Keys" I think and its under the keyboard options - this might
also depend on the keyboard you have.

Similarly, there's accessibilty options for the mouse.

I think you already found what you need but just in case... I looked at the
Wizard and found that it sets up your numeric keypad to move the cursor
up-and down, side-to side, even at 45 degree angles. Use the "Next" button
until you locate this feature. Having vision problems, I'm considering
this. Only thing I'm unsure about is: will this disable my numeric keys as
a means to enter numbers in my spreadsheets; I didn't try it out as my
settings would be all messed up and I don't want to have to recover things
for the above reason.
