Motherboard Dimensiion Confusion

Reference my prior posts.

In my search for a M2N78-LA replacement I came up with a Biostar
TA780GM2+ on Amazon. I almost jumped on it, but now I am not so sure
it will suit my need. I certainly am confused.

It says the dimensions are 3X10X13, but it says it is a 'MATX'. The
length and width of the ATX board in my present HP tower are 10X10.
So, although I thought this Biostar board is a microATX, I don't
think it will replace and fit in my tower. And so, I have to ask a
dumb question - is there more than one sized microATX?

No thanks. All you're asking about here is the size of the motherboard.

microATX specification
http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/matxspe1.2.pdf

ATX specification
http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/atx2_2.pdf

You can see the board size specified in these docs. Looks like the mobo
in which you are interested is an ATX form factor, not a microATX. You
did not provide a link to the product in question for anyone else to see
the specs that Amazon listed for the mobo. Could be they are wrong.
Could be you read it wrong.

When I did a search on "TA780G" at Biostar's web site (something you
should've already done to research the mobo), I got two products:

http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=357
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=344

They list the size of both mobos at 24.4 x 21.5 cm (W x L), or 9.6 x
8.46 inches. I don't know where you got the 13-inch dimension but then
I've never seen a mobo that was 3-INCHES THICK, either, as you specified
for the dimensions!

Did Amazon write up the advertisement? Or is this some user selling off
their used mobo? Provide the link to Amazon's ad.

Mebbe so. But it says it is MATX. Doesn't that mean micro ATX? Or
does MATX mean something else?

I know. It looked crazy to me too. See

Just by looking at it, seems like a MicroATX to me. But looks like there
is definitely an error in Amazons description.

If you read the Description section of the ad, you'll see it says:

DIMENSION: Micro ATX Form Factor Dimension: 24.4cm X 21.5cm ( W x L )

Remember that the "product" sold by Amazon is the entire package, not
what Biostar manufactured as a raw component (sans packaging and all
other items that Biostar includes). The size under Product Details
could be the box in which the mobo gets shipped. Well, once you add
cables, mounting hardware, backpanel plate, manual, etc. 3 inches
sounds about right for the *box* and the added length would be for all
the extras that ship *with* the mobo.

Amazon isn't selling you just the motherboard. They're selling you the
packaged product. Personally I don't see why a buyer would care
about the size of the packaging unless there was concern it would fit
through their door or into their mailbox.

Don't worry. That red mark where you slapped your forehead will
dissipate in a few minutes - unless you had a stapler in your hand at
the time.

The 3 x 10 x 13 dimension is obviously the box dimension. The Tecnical Details
gives the dimensions as 9.6" x 8.5", and the Product Description says 24.4cm W
by 21.5cm L. That's also 9.6" x 8.5".
Owww X 10
