Most common page size?

I like to set pages with a width greater than 1024. Most modern monitors
can exceed this width. This prevents your bars from ending halfway across
the page. If you use a background with a left border, it prevents the
pattern repeating across the page. I would try to keep the photo inserts
at about 640x480, in order to view the entire photo on the screen. When
writing wide pages, do not center content--- line it up from the left to
prevent viewers having to scroll on each page to view content.

The length of the page is fairly unimportant. Most viewers would rather
scroll down than flip pages. I do, however, like to place graphics series
on linked pages so that I can have music matched to the graphic content. A
simple <-arrow-> set, or next/back/local index hyperlink works well. (and
is easy to use--- be consistent so the viewers don't become confused)

I run my monitor at 1280 x 1024 and never view any web site or application
at full screen.

So, if I prefer to write a wide page, and justify everything to the left,
you wouldn't even notice, right?

Those who view full screen wouldn't be bothered either.

I just LOVE pleasing everybody.

When designing a page, what does everyone feel is the most common page size
to design for? 640x480?

But by designing your pages at a width of 1024, as per your link, you are
cutting off your content, which then requires user to scroll to the right.
The most common resolution is 800 x 600 at this point in time.

Now if you design with a background image of 1024 or larger wide and then
left align or center your content within 750 pixels, then users of 800 would
not have to scroll right to read your content.

If you are happy with forcing your site visitors to scroll right, then don't
change.

However if you want visitors to enjoy visiting your site and then returning,
then you need to design more with them in mind.
