Size of Web Pages

Is there a recommended size for web pages? If you make them too wide they
won't fit on the screen and you get scroll bars at the bottom. I notice
that many commercial web pages seem to allow for favorites down the side of
the pages so you don't get scroll bars even with favorites showing. However,
if you make the page too narrow you lose space for content. So is there a
generally accepted page width?
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks. Peter

Using tables, 100% width or fixed width of 750 pixels

Hi Peter,

No, there is not. In fact, you're standing on the precipice of one of the
stickiest problems that web developers have to deal with. What about screen
resolution? Window size? Browser? All of these are variables you will have
to deal with. And there are no simple solutions.

Just so you know, depending on your potential viewer, it is around 40%
to 50% viewing with 800 X 600 resolution. Some of those have higher
resolution screens but still view at the lower resolution for many
different reasons.

I build all of my commercial sites in one of two configurations -

1. Fixed width at 760px, left aligned.
2. Fixed width at 760px, centering.

You could also do flexible, so that the design flexes horizontally to fill
any size browser viewport, but if there are only a few paragraphs on the
page, that can look a bit sparse on a large screen.
