more re defrag

I ask to be tolerated for 2 follow-up questions on the subject of
defragging, namely: [1] One of the earlier responses re defragging several
times in sequence seems to recommend running a registry-cleaning program. I
have seen a lot of advice against such unless you know what you are doing-
and I would appreciate comments on this point [2] Assuming that there are
third party defragging programs, [which I didn’t know before] would anyone
care to recommend one ?
I find this forum especially useful , and appreciate the help that I
find here - TIA -Jay

The only time I can recommend using a registry cleaner is if you are trying
to solve a problem, everything else has failed and you are ready to format
the drive and reinstall the system. Since you have nothing to lose and
hopefully have already backed up your important data, it would not hurt to
use a cleaner. I can see no connection between a cleaner and defragging the
hard drive.

You do not need a registry cleaner. Using them achieves little and risks
much.

http://aumha.net:80/viewtopic.php?t=28099

Once you have used a registry cleaner there is no way to know whether it
has damaged the registry.

The need to use third party defragmenters is generally grossly
exagerated in these newsgroups. You need to understand what works and
have a good routine.

What has caused your current interest in defragmentation? Is it poor
system performance or a problem using the Disk Defragmenter provided
with Windows XP?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

For both the novice and expert, I highly reccomend CCleaner. It cleans out
more than old reg settings and safely creates a backup.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

If you use any reg cleaner at all, it is always best to have a backup.

I completely agree. However, it is also important to realize that if
what the registry cleaner does is bad enough, your computer may not
boot. If that occurs (and it is always possible, even with the best
registry cleaner) the backup is useless.

And since no registry cleaner does anything useful (those unneeded
registry entries don't hurt you in any way), they are all a bad
bargain: you run a risk in return for no benefit. I recommend against
them all.

On the other hand, CCleaner, if used for its other, non-registry
cleaning purposes, is a good program.

No problem with the defragmenter report.

How RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

What are your anti-spyware arrangements?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

I ask to be tolerated for 2 follow-up questions on the subject
of defragging, namely: [1] One of the earlier responses re
defragging several times in sequence seems to recommend running a
registry-cleaning program. I have seen a lot of advice against such
unless you know what you are doing- and I would appreciate comments
on this point [2] Assuming that there are third party defragging
programs, [which I didn't know before] would anyone care to
recommend one ? I find this forum especially useful , and
appreciate the help that I
find here - TIA -Jay

To respond the Gerry’s post with my thanks for the interest and help - I
hope that I’ve managed to get this right.
I wish to repeat: since I defragged twice in succession last week, the
machine has been alert enough - I have had no occasion to enter any further
big amount of text material [proofreading for the last day or two] Jay -

[3]Total Virtual Memory, 2.00 GB [4]Available Virtual Memory, 1.96 GB

under ‘commit charge’, total = 804735; limit = 3503992; peak = 868888

trying to get additional info using the task manager page: after checking
the boxes for peak memory usage and virtual memory size, I get only 5 – not 6
– total boxes checked: I then get a list of EIGHTY processes running,
beginning with winword exe. The 6 biggest seem to be [in order of size ]
waol.exe @ 54,896 – then ashWebSv.exe @40,536 – then pctsSvc.exe @24,448 -
then sychost @19980 – then ashServ.exe @ 15936 – then winword.exe @12,792
