more problems sending

I recently signed up for a googlemail account, and can receive e-mails OK -
and sometimes when I send them it has worked, but now when I click on
"Send/Receive" it only checks the incoming mail and doesn't connect to the
outgoing server at all. The messages stay in my Outbox, and then when I
close Windows Mail I get a message asking whether I want to send them using
my default connection, I click "Yes", but it doesn't happen.

I must add, that I tried again and got an error message:

"An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'change of address', Account:
'pop.googlemail.com', Server: 'smtp.googlemail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0B"

"Unknown" errors are typically caused by a non-compatible antivirus program.
Which one are you using?

I'm using Nod 32, which hasn't been a problem in the past, with another
provider (Easily)

First you need to determine if those messages are 'stuck' in the Outbox.
Move as many of those messages as you can to the Drafts folder.
If one or more can't be moved or deleted, apply the Microsoft fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090

I downloaded and applied the fix, the "Send/Receive" box does now say to
send messages, but I then get an error message:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'change of address', Account:
'pop.googlemail.com', Server: 'smtp.googlemail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0B

I also can't move the messages out of my out-folder!

What to do now? I'm getting very fed -up with this.

Some recent versions of NOD32 have caused problems in Windows Mail
after some of its updates. You might report these problems to ESET and
wait for them to fix them.

You might want to click on the triangle to the right of Send/Receive while
you are in the Inbox, then click on Send All, to make it try to send without
also receiving.

It sounds like you are having multiple problems with sending, which
could well be caused by your antivirus. Nod32 isn't known as a big
troublemaker for Windows Mail, but I wouldn't rule it out. As a minimum,
you must disable email scanning in Nod32. If that does not fix the
problem, do a trial uninstall. You can always reinstall Nod32 if it
turns out *not* to be the culprit.

That problem develops when you are running a non-compatible antivirus.
Which antivirus program are you running?

Once you have cleared up the cause, you will need to fix the damage.
If there is no error message when you press Send, then at least one
of the messages in the Outbox is stuck. To confirm this, open the
Outbox and try to move as many of those messages as you can to the
Drafts folder. If any won't move and can't be deleted, apply this
Microsoft fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
