More lost "data" and items not in quarantine

Similar to Keith Mitchell March 28/05 ("Where has my
Overnet and E-donkey Gone") I also find that I have lost
a number of "data" files that are noted as quarantined on
an earlier MSASW Beta scan. Unlike Mr. Mitchell,
however, this quarantine does not show up on the
quarantine list, so I cannot restore the files. One of
Bill Sanderson's replies to Mitchell seems to suggest
this could be a problem.

Is there a solution?

You mention that the items were noted as quarantined.

If you look at the quarantine folder (this is a subfolder
of the installation folder--typically c:\program
files\microsoft antispyware--do you see files there?

the files will be renamed, but otherwise intact.

If you see files there, when you went to the UI for
removing items from quarantine--how long did you wait for
items to appear?

There have been reports here if lengthy waits--hours.

It won't hurt to give it a lengthy trial.

Interesting. Looking in the quarantine folder was one
of the first things I did. Going by the date of file
modification, they do not appear to be there...

When I said that the items were noted as "quarantined", I
observed this from the Spyware Scan History. That
showed several items quarantined on Jan 13/14, which
corresponds to the first time I ran MSAS. The Spyware
Scan History shows only one subsequent quarantine, which
is the relevant one, which occurred on March 9. BOTH the
quarantine folder and quarantine list in "Manage Spyware
Quarantine" list only files quarantined on Jan 13/14
(using the "date last modified" in the case of the
quarantine folder). That is how I concluded that they
may not be there.

There are more files in the quarantine folder than the
number of quarantines indicated in the Scan History.

In my case, we are talking about only 150 files, so I do
not know how long it might take for them to appear in the
UI for removing them from quarantine. I will try to see
if a lengthy wait helps, but given the dating issue, I am
not confident.

Thanks, and any other ideas?

I'm trying to remember whether cleaner.log is cumulative--I think it may be.

Does it show quarantine operations? This is a text log file in the
Microsoft Antispyware installation folder.

I share your pessimism, I'm afraid, given the date issue and the small
number of files--the time issue was in a couple of situations involving over
a thousand files, as I recall.

FWIW, in my very oblique experience, the quarantine files may be simply
renamed--i.e. when they are MP3's, they are playable by renaming them .MP3.

This may not be very useful, but it could be helpful occasionally I suspect.

I don't know any way to retrieve data from the quarantine sub-folder if it
isn't listed by the program.

The quarantine area is a subfolder (called "quarantine") of Microsoft
Antispyware's installation folder.
