More i386

I read here that this directory, i386, was where the
setup files for Windows XP are located (used by Compaq).
Therefore, can I copy this file to a cd and thus have a
set up CD for Windows XP. (None came with my computer).

Simply copying the i386 folder wouldn't really help. The cd needs to be made
bootable and there are also other folders needed. Most manufacturers also
add extra software to enhance their product. Surely Compaq provided you with
a recovery disk?

Now that they're owned by HP they probably did. Even back in '97, Compaq
would give the owner a few cds that just restored the computer back to
factory settings and not a plain Windows cd.

Haven't tried it, but you should be able to copy the folder to a CD and then
with a Win98/Me boot disk with CD-ROM support and smartdrv.exe, setup of XP
should work.
With the i386 folder and a third party burning application like ECDC or Nero
you can create a bootable CD by using the link below.
Click on or copy and paste the link into your web browser address box if
