Hi,

Thanks to CS, my system drive is now C: and my data drive
is F: However, I am still unable to access most of the
folders on my data drive.

I originally had ME as my o/s. I formatted the system
drive and installed XP-Pro on it with the NTFS file
system. The data drive I left as it was (FAT32).

There were no problems during the installation of XP-Pro.

When I open the data drive, I can see all the files and
folders but when I try to open some of the folders I get
an error message:

C:\<foldername> is not accessible. The parameter is
incorrect

When I hold the mouse pointer over the folder, a tooltip
comes up saying: Folder is empty

I know it isn't, cos I can boot the machine with my ME
startup disk and view the contents of the folders in
their entirety.

I thought of using convert.exe to make the data drive
NTFS also, but as this is a one-way process, I'm loathed
to do it as I don't wanna lose any of my data.

I would really appreciate it if someone has a solution to
this problem.

Thanks in advance

Thanks, but my data drive is FAT32!! - I don't have a
Security tab when I click on Properties

Hello Jon:

Glad you got it sorted out. As Willit has replied, you now need to
take ownership of the folders on your data drive. Follow the link he
gave you. Good luck and regards.

Thanks again, but as I replied to Willit, I don't have a
Security tab for any of the folders on my data drive. I'm
assuming that this is because it is formatted with the
FAT32 file system and not NTFS.

I've even tried booting the machine in Safe Mode (even
tho I know I shouldn't need to do this in XP-Pro) but
still no Security tab in the folder properties!

I can set permissions if I make a folder shared
(theoretically anyway - I haven't actually tried it yet)
but there's no option to take ownership.

What can I do???

Thanks & Regards

Hi Jon:

I see what you mean. I just tested this on my FAT-32 drive and it
looks like if the folders are shared, permissions can be set. I'm not
sure I trust that to work though.

I just tested it and it doesn't work - so don't bother. I think your
SAM file is probably confused because of the juggling around that was
done with the drives and drive letters. Anyway you might want to try
this:

Boot to WinME, copy the data folders to removable media if possible -
flash drive, CDRW, DVDRW, ZIP disk, etc. Then boot to Pro and see if
you can read them. If so, copy them back to their original locations.
That should reset any permissions or restrictions that might be there.

Hopefully that may work.
