Monitor working. Check Cables. Check Power Supply. PROBLEM

D

Dennis

I hope this makes sense: (I mean the explanation of the problem cuz the
problem makes no sense to me)

For two days now I have had to completely shut the power off (at the power
supply) to even turn off the cpu when I get the message on my monitor '
monitor is working check power supply check cables' (the pink/green/and blue
message on blk bkgrd usually seen when your monitor is 'on' but your cpu is
'off').

This problem has occurred after 30 minutes just stepping away from my
computer (when I didn't even power off the monitor). This problem has
occurred barely 10 minutes into a task, and while I was actually making
entries. I was online for close to 4 hours getting some of those MS Windows
updates (fell behind - have dialup) and had no problems, but then, well it
did it again.

Anyway, I am glad I have learned the hard-way about Saving my work, but I
don't like hard-booting my computer this often.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Miscellaneous:

Recently I am experiencing a situation that I have never seen before in all
my years on the computer. (Not that it makes any difference, but.. it is a
bit odd.)

I have windows XP Home version and a fairly new computer. (Norton
AntiVirus).

Virus Scans indicate no virus on my computer. All connections are good and
free of debris. They were before and they definitely are now because
checked them all three times.

I normally leave my cpu on and just turn off the screen when I am not using
the computer.

Hi,

Does the pc shut down or reboot when this occurs? If so, then you may have
an overheating problem, otherwise I would suspect the video card is bad.

I use a damp cloth with Windex. If you are going to use rubbing alcohol to
clean your monitor you shouldn't do so while there is power to it as rubbing
alcohol is flamable. Or, more accurately, did you mean something else? I'm
not sure what you're asking unless you're asking how to clean the black
screen.

Thank you,

You propose an interesting diversion from the path that I was originally on.

Since, I physically have to disconnect the power from my pc so it will shut
down so that I can reboot, the answer to the question is 'No'. I will
henceforth seek a diagnostic to determine if in fact it could be my video
card.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You can get a special package of wipes for the purpose at Radio Shack. Just
tell the clerk what you want to do.

They are the same wipes that are recommended for soft lens glasses.
