monitor will no longer shut down

I have my monitor set to shut off after 20 minutes of non-use. At 10 minutes
my screensaver starts but something runs and then my computer returns to the
desktop. How can I determine what is causing my computer to return to the
desktop? I assume that some task is running every few minutes, but I don't
know how to determine what it might be.

look in control panel and scheduled tasks first. Screensaver runs if the
screen activity is idle for that length of time. ie no mouse movement, do you
have a wireless mouse? this might be the culprit, something is causing the
mouse to move even slightly will exit the SS.

There is nothing in scheduled tasks and the mouse is not moving. It is a
trackball, and once my hands are off of it, it does not move.
