monitor support in Windows XP

I have lost my monitor support in Win XP. No "monitor"
is listed in the device manager. I think that Windows is
using a VGA driver with a 60 Hz.refresh rate. I cannot
install a monitor using add hardware in control panel as
it is not listed. Does anyone know how I can reinstall
monitor support in Win XP?

Hi, John.

Some of this is hardware-specific, so my solution may be different from
yours, but I think most systems work just about this way...

Rather than use the Device Manager, right-click on an empty spot on your
Desktop, then click Properties on the context menu that pops up. This
should bring up Display Properties. Click the Settings tab, and then
Advanced. (Or go to Control Panel | Display.) On my computer, that gives
me a screen with many tabs, including one for Adapter and one for Monitor.
My flat panel, a KDS LCD, is identified simply as a "Plug and Play Monitor".
The Adapter tab should show you what card you have installed, and which
driver you are using for it.

Is your Display Properties anything like this? Do you have the proper
drivers for your graphics card? What is the make and model of your
computer - or your graphics card if you've changed it? And your monitor?

I have tried that also. There is no monitor listed in
the Monitor Tab, and the all references to "monitor" are
glayed out. The monitor and graphics card are have not
been changed. They each worked fine before. Any other
ideas? Thanks for the reply.

I recently did a clean install of XP Home and had a similar problem but I
didn't look in device manager. My MB has onboard video and after I installed
the drivers for the MB, the monitor was identified and I could change
refresh rates and resolution. Not sure why it recognized the monitor too
after I installed the drivers.
