Monitor standby

Just purchased a new PC.Trouble is the monitor seems to
go into standby mode by itself, that is there is no
display but the monitir on/off button pulses like a heart
beat.You can not turn the monitor on or off when this is
happening.If the PC is fired up after some hours the
screen comes alive and everything is back OK.
Whats happening???????????????
 
did you make sure all the cables (power and the one going
to the computer) are tight at both ends in the sockets?
