Monitor sleeps @ startup

I gave my old puter (900mhz celeron, 256meg ram, windows
xp home) to a friend. They have tried two monitors and
they're both doing the same thing. At startup they see
the Windows XP screen and then the monitor goes into sleep
mode (the power light on the monitor blinks). Any ideas?

Hello

Try to open the pc and make sure that the video card
is seated properly, may have cam loose in the moving
process, just something to check

Tried that...not it. We are able to use the monitors in
safe mode but not a regular startup.>-----Original Message-

Does the monitor support the refresh rate that is specified in the
properties? I have an old monitor that seems to sleep when the refresh rate
is too high. Some newer ones display a video mode not supported.

That may be the problem. But, how can you change the
refresh rate if you can't get the monitor to work so you
can see the screen? Is there someplace in SAFE mode where
I can change monitor settings? All of the monitor
settings seem to not be available in SAFE mode.

When it is first booting up, I believe you can hit the F8 key to get to the
startup menu. In XP I think there is a "Start in VGA Mode" or something
like that. That will start it at 640 x 480 with the lowest refresh rate,
and then you can change it once you get in.
