monitor shutdown problem

I think since SP2 I have no longer been able to reboot the computer.
There used to also be a problem with the shutdown just hanging. But
now, when shutting down, the computer, itself, will turn off - but the
monitor will stay on. To be in a position to start the computer, the
monitor must be closed. I need to press the off button and hold it
for a few seconds before the monitor turns off.

At first I suspected the monitor because of the way it is set up. I
have a Compaq that came with ME. I have installed XP at different
times, due to never ending problems, both as an upgrade and as the
original OS because I do have both programs. The computer came with a
flat panel which I think was an afterthought because the monitor
cannot be plugged into the standard computer monitor port. It has to
use the video card port. (maybe this is normal; I don't know)

I have updated all drivers and am on a second monitor. The problem
still exists. I go to shutdown, wait a minute or so, then hear the
system go down. But the monitor is still locked.

There are no obvious conflicts in the hardware manager. What else can
I look for? Any suggestions as to what is causing this? Thanks.

You're a little confusing...The monitor on a desktop system has a power line
and a Video line that connects to the video card which can be either analog
or digital. This connections depends upon the type of monitor...Most LCD
nowadays have both connections, some have just a digital connection.Lots of
video cards have both analog and digital output. They are not interchangeable
meaning you cannot use an analog line to a digital connection or vice versa.
This sends the video signal to the monitor. When the Computer shuts down the
signal ends but unless the Monitor's Power line is also plugged into the
computer the monitor stays on.Very few monitors nowadays plug into the
computer most plug into a seperate power supply like your wall outlet or
power bar.So the computer cannot control the power to the monitor.

where is yours plugged into??
