Using Windows XP my monitor screen has started flickering recently. Nothing
is new. Display adapter is Intel Extreme Graphics 2. Monitor is "GEM Plug
and Play". It is an LCD.

Attach the computer to a different monitor. Does the flickering go away? If
so, this is a sign that your original monitor is dying and will need to be
replaced. If the flickering continues with a different monitor:

1. Update the video drivers. Since the video is onboard, get the drivers
from either the OEM if you have that sort of machine (Dell, HP, Sony, etc.)
or from the motherboard mftr.

2. If updating the video drivers doesn't work, then the video chip on the
motherboard is going. You can possibly work around this by installing a
separate video card.

i agree , try the monitor on a difrent computer or try changing the refresh
rate . LCD monitors when they get older sometimes will start to flicker a lil
bit . This is usualy a sign that your inverter for the backlight on your
screen is getting ready to fail . if it works fine on a diffrent refrsh rate
or works fine on a diffrent computer then yer inverter or CCFL backlight
tubes are fine . If it is the backlight it may not fail completly but just
continue to flicker ,or it may just go out one day . I am not to familar with
the GEM monitors but i do know that you can usualy find replacement backlight
CCFL tubes and inverters on ebay for a decent price . As long as you have a
lil bit of technical know how and the time it can save you some money to
replace it yourself than have it repaired or buy a new monitor .

This is where I was going with my initial question. Thanks, Agent Viper
007 for writing out what is an effective approach to this.
