Monitor flicker problem.

My son's monitor at college has developed a bad flicker in the top
half. I haven't had a chance to go up there so I am describing it as
he told me. Anyway, he tried a different monitor, same thing, Moved
the new monitor to a different machine, flicker went away. I had him
remove the video card and use the video on the motherboard, same
problem. He has tried various resolutions/refresh rates to no avail,
although the lower the resolution the better. I had him remove all
foreign influences from his desk, still the flicker. I'm at a loss,
any ideas?

If the cable detaches from the back of the monitor, try a different
able. -Dave

If it's in one area of the screen and changing the monitor and video
card makes no difference then it *has* to be an outside influence. My
bet would be something like a faulty flourscent ballast transformer
close by or a faulty dimmer switch close by. Seems as there may be RF
interference.

Do people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water
know that spelling Evian backwards results in the word Naive?

That was my thinking. I'm going to see him Sunday, so I might bring a
long extension cord just to try an outlet on a different circuit. I
can't think of much else to try. Do you think the computer power
supply might cause something like this?

Although you say you had him remove all foreign influences from his desk, in
my experience, this is caused by a 'fat plug' in the wall behind the
monitor. (As others have already suggested).

My opinion would be that if the power supply had that much lack of
filtering, he would have a hell of a lot more trouble with his computer
than he has. ^^

tell him to move the:
fan
cell phone
unprotected 15in 40lb magneted speakers
TV cable box
the TV set
the giant loadstone he got from carlsbad
and the 'decrorative' refrigerator magnets (on the tower)
away from the monitor
;^)
