The monitor has a severe flicker.....

Its a homebuilt PC with an ATI Radeon X800. The monitor is a
Viewsonic 19 0r 20 in LCD with digital conn. Got it from Newegg, I
believe less than a year ago. THe X800 is even newer. I don't have
another video card to try in it. However I borrowed my brothers Dell
LCD monitorand tried it. Unfortunately, his monitor is analog only. So
I couldn't really test the DVI output. With the Dell monitor plugged
into the analog output on the video card, it had a perfect picture.
What are the chances that the DVI output on the video card has gone
bad, but the analog output is still good? I suppose this is possible?
What to do? I guess I really have to try another video card or get
another DVI monitor to try before I can know for sure which is bad?
It isn't a problem with a buggy driver, I don't think, as one day
it was perfect, the next day flickering, yet I had not changed any
drivers. Should I try running the Radeon driver installation utility
anyway?

This sounds like a bad cable. Do you have cats in your house? Serious
question. I've seen similar problems caused by pet damage to video cable.
Or it could just be a loose connection. Have you tried REMOVING and
reseating FIRMLY on both ends? -Dave

What monitor driver are you using...plugnplay? no good.. get the driver from Veiwsonic. I
have a VG2021m and the same thing happened when I first used it. Changed the driver, all
is good. If you know all the modes in which the monitor will use then try different ones,
easier if you just get the proper driver.

Some monitors use a modulation technique for the backlight, to try to
improve the response time. If the method is failing, that could cause
the backlight to flicker. Knowing the model number of the Viewsonic,
might make it easier to look that up. Some methods for doing that,
are described here. The OSD may have an option to change it. And
if this is just an inverter failure mode, try reducing the brightness
of the screen, and see if it stops.
