monitor doesn't turn off when XP is closed

when i used to shutdown windows 98, the monitor
used to turn off automatically. this doesn't happen
with windows XP. if anyone knows how to make this
work with windows XP, please let me know.

Monitors will go into sleep mode, drawing about 6 watts of electricity. They
do NOT turn off. At least I have never seen one that does (-:
