Monitor display problem

Jim

Several days ago I ran a long command (from another newsgroup) on my XP Home
system in an attempt to disable NetMeeting. When I restarted, the Windows
screen was garbled, so I restarted again, in VGA mode, and got this kind of
message in a dialog box:
"Rundll32.exe advpack.dll, LaunchINFSection C:Windows\INF\msnetmtg.inf,
NetMtg.Remove.PerUser.NT is about to run. Do you want to change your
personal settings. Yes No"

After clicking No, I restarted and again got the garbled screen. Restarted
in VGA, clicked Yes on message, restarted and still had garbled screen. The
only way I can get a normal screen (outside Safe Mode) is to enable VGA
before Windows loads. According to Device Manager, my Nvidia display adaptor
is working OK, with the latest driver. When I try booting at different
display settings, I get the same garbled screen every time. (Yet when I
enable VGA and check screen properties, the settings show as 800X600
resolution, 16-bit color, 75Hz refresh.) I would do a system restore, but
unfortunately don't have a restore point before the problem began.

Suggestions?

Hi Jim,

Why the PerUserNT? That is the part you should question.

To remove NetMeeting: Start/Run

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
C:\WINDOWS\inf\msnetmtg.inf,NetMtg.Remove

From here, try reinstalling it and start from scratch.

Reinstall: To reinstall, open the Windows\Inf folder (this is a hidden
folder, so you may need to adjust your Folder Options
to show hidden files and folders. Or you can click Start, Run and enter
%systemroot%\Inf).

Locate the msnetmtg.inf file in the Inf folder. Right click and select
Install. Have your XP CD handy.

Kelly,

Thanks for the advice, which I have followed. However, the garbled screen
persists. Why does NetMeeting affect the screen display and how do I
overcome the problem (other than booting thru VGA mode every time)?
