Monitor color going in and out

I thought my monitor was going out but have changed montiors and the
color comes and goes. Monitor stays on but am not able to tell the
difference between black and red colors, (trying to work on a
spreadsheet) Any help would be great...!
 
Not to sound stupid but video cable I got from the monitor that I
switched it out with but how do I check the Video card?
 
You will first check the card to see if it is loose (not fully inserted into
the motherboard, do this with power off AND the ac power cord has been
removed from the back of the pc). If it is or is not loose it still would
not hurt to remove the video card and then
re-insert it (blow off any dust bunnies from the card and the connector).

After the card has been re-inserted (check to make certain it is all the way
into the connector) and the screw that holds the card in place is securely
fastened, then power up and see if the problem is fixed.

If this does not solve the problem you can try re-installing the video
drivers by downloading the latest version from the video card manufacturer's
web site (do not get the driver from Microsoft's update web site, they have
been known to cause problems).

If the new driver does not fix the problem then most likely the video card
has gone bad and need to be replaced.
