how do i configure my modem so it doesnt make a sound
when im dialing up?

Rick;
From XP HELP:
To adjust modem speaker volume

You must be logged on as a computer administrator in order to complete this
procedure.

1.. Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
2.. On the Modems tab, click the modem that you want to configure, and then
click Properties.
3.. On the Modem tab, under Speaker volume, move the slider to the left or
right to adjust the volume.
Notes

a.. To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, point to Settings, click
Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
b.. Some modems will not allow you to adjust the speaker volume.
Or go to Help and type: modem volume/click the arrow and see what pops up.

Control Panel - Phones and Modems, Modems page. Select the modem,
Properties button, and on the Advanced page enter M0 (M zero) in the
Extra Initialisation settings
