I have just installed a new modem into my xp machine. Now whenever I dialout
it does not dial the area code, just the number, thereby not reaching the
server. Is there a modem setting to fix this within xp or is it toally within
modem properties

Try Network Connections> Advanced> Dialing Preferences. I think that you'll
find what you need there - setting area code you're dialing from, dialing
prefs and/or requirements, etc.
