Modem via com port will not work

Hi

I have a problem that I can not fix.

I have a program that needs a modem and is selected via a com port, each
time I select it I get an error message.

Using hyper terminal I can dial out by selecting the modem but if I select
the com port the modem is on I then get an error message that another
service is using it.

I do not have another service using it as far as I know.

I have brought up task manager and ended in turn each process but still it
will not work.

This is driving me crazy, Help please XP MCE

Thanks

you can add another com port, eg com port 2, via new hardware add. then get
the modem on the new port. also, the faxing capability in windows may be
active and awaiting any call ins. you may have to disabled the faxing if you
want to use the modem for the net.

I have installed a new com port but I have a yellow mark against it?

Hi Yar,
Your Serial mouse may be using your COM Port which preventing your Modem to
access and connect to the Internet through this COM.
Try to assign the Mouse another Com port or Disable the Support for
SerialKey devices in your Control Panel.
To do that, Click Start >> Control Panel >> Accessibility Options >> General
Tab, cclick to clear the Check Box in front of Support SerialKey devices or
you can change the COM port there to another Available one.
Try this link for more Info:

Hope this helps
Please write back with your findings

hmm, it might be an irq conflict. if you go to the device properties you
will have the option to change the irq. make a selection from the drop dwn
window to manually set these settings. win will tell you which ones are in
use or free. the other thing is if you actually need a hyper terminal on
your comport 1. if not, disable it or unistall it. this would help you
modem get attached too....

there is a another way that i use. i went and bought a serial to usb
adaptor. i didn't have any problems with my com port, but wanted to
rearrange my wiring. so i was able to connect my modem to a usb hub instead
of directly to the pc. it works just as well. what i noticed was that the
extra com port i had in device manager, like the one that i suggested that
you create as well, was now tied and dedicated to the usb convertor with the
modem on it. but this is an alternative, that may save you some headache and
help with the wiring fiasco.......

I have followed the MS link but in device manager I have com 1 and 2 only,
the modem is on com 3 ?.

I have in the past tried to change the port to 1 or 2 but it then reports
conflicts.

it wouldn't be a problem if you went ahead and deleted/unistall the com ports
from your device manager; as they can simply be reinstalled via add new
hardware. i suggest you delete the com ports, your modem device and
disconnect your modem wire from the pc too, then reboot. upon the pc
energizing, press your f2 and access your bios/cmos settings. in there
check to ensure that your com port is set to full duplex - which it may be
(but check anyway) , exit cmos and start windows. if you windows is working
ok, it will automatically detect a com port and install it. then plug your
modem in and windows will try to install it, but my guess is that you wil be
prompted to select or install a driver for it. I would circumvent the driver
from your modem cd and select a generic 56k modm driver from windows. your
modem will be set for that com port. be sure that the com port properties is
set to the exact bit rate as your modem. Also, you might want to consider
not using the modem software on the cd because the generic driver will allow
you to send/rcv faxes and access the net too. and windows keeps fax msgs on
record if you access the fax console. (However, i recommend that if you need
a record of your faxes, to print them out and file them away. fax software,
windows or others, are unreliable to preserving them on the system) other
than that, the modem is not really good for anything else and the cd software
is somewhat absolete. also, the extras on the cd may be spyware too. if you
do install the cd, you will have to play around with fine tuning the devices.
so be sure to create a restore point before installing the new software. ( i
was thinking about the hyperterminal that you mentioned, and when i needed to
use hyperterminal it was to access a government website that had an older
computer system, but my hyperterminal worked through the modem and not
directly via a com port)...... sorry for the length of this msg, i have lots
of unhappy experiences with modems.....
