Com port and modem problem

My Acer laptop has has XP Pro loaded (fresh install), but it was originally supplied with XP home, (but couldn't connect to my employer's domain with that) and since the upgrade the modem is not working.

Device Manager reports that it is working, but if I run the modem diagnostic check, it never gets started as it says it can't connect to the com port
The modem driver comes with an install routine that automatically assigns it to COM3. If I look at com ports under Device Manager it does not list ANY. Why not
I don't think this is the root cause of the problem however, since it worked OK like this previously when using XP home, and no COM ports showed up then either
The modem driver allows com port reassignment, but whatever number I select (from the dozens available) it says there may be a clash with another device/service

Where do I begin to look to doagnose this problem when Device Manager doesn't list any com ports to interrogate their properties

TIA

What does it say in Phone and Modem Options / Modem tab / Advanced tab /
Advanced Port Settings (mine uses Com port 3) Jym
