Modem Speaker configuration

Does anyone know how to disable the modem speaker for a
Generic 56k modem on an XP OS, other than using the slide
bar in the modem properties control panel window ?
It could be that XP does not support this function on my
modem.

You can try this...
Control Panel|PHONE & MODEM|MODEMS tab|PROPERTIES|ADVANCED

In the Extra Settings box type...
M0 (zero, not the letter o)
