Modem not working after driver update.

I recently re-installed XP Home so did the updates from
Windows Update, including one for the modem. The modem
worked fine on previous installation. Modem says it is
installed on COM 3, but in Device Manager, there is no
COM 3 listed.

I tried to change the modem to COM 1 or 2, but they're
both "in use" (don't know by what). COM 1 and 2 are both
using the same driver file: serenum.sys, if that's any
help in finding out what they are.

The modem responds to queries but doesn't dial, no sounds.

Previously it was using a generic driver, but Driver
Rollback says there's nothing to roll back to (since the
re-install I suppose). Driver Update in the Modem
Properties says it could not find a better match.

Thanks for any help.

Try removing the driver and let windos relocate it. don't
try to install it on com1 or com2 since they are physical
coms and want work. it should work on com3 try
downloading an updated driver from the manufacturer site.
What is the model of your modem?
