Modem Install Win 98SE

Hi. I'm having modem problems on a computer I just assembled. Asrock
775i65G motherboard, Intel Celeron 3.2 Ghz cpu, 512 Mb DIMM...Win 98
SE, Trendnet TFM-PCIV92A modem (says 98 SE compatible).
I have one yellow question mark in Device Manager...on PCI System
Management Bus. Neither my Win 98 SE, Asrock mb install, or modem
installation CD's have drivers for it. I couldn't find any on Asrock's
website & MS doesn't seem to support 98 SE anymore. Device Manager
shows no interrupt request conflicts on the modem & says "This device
is working properly", but System Properties says "PC Cards (PCMCIA):
No PC Card Sockets are installed".
Am I right that it doesn't know that the modem card has been plugged
in??? I think I'll try another PCI socket & see if that makes a
difference. Where can I find a driver for System Management Bus?
Should I just give up & get XP or Vista instead? LOL Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Have you actually gone through the modem diagnostics to see if the modem
is working? I remember once using '98 and having the modem misidentified as
something else (though I can't remember what it was, though something obtuse
that I hadn't heard of). When in angst I pointed the yellow exlamation
marked item to the modem drivers they installed and on restart the strange
device had disappeared and the modem worked. This happened on a Gigabyte mb.

Your modem appears to be a controllerless PCI type:
http://www.trendnet.com/Products/TFM-PCIV92A.htm

The System Management Bus (SMB) has nothing to do with the modem. It
is a protocol which interconnects I2C devices.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Management_Bus

The article states that "Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows
Vista support SMBus devices, but Windows 98 does not".

Having said that, it is possible to communicate with I2C devices (ie
devices on the SMB) in Win98 using appropriate utilities.
Device Manager
shows no interrupt request conflicts on the modem & says "This device
is working properly", but System Properties says "PC Cards (PCMCIA):
No PC Card Sockets are installed".

PCMCIA cards are used in laptops.

If the Modems/Diagnostics tab in Control Panel produces a bunch of
ATIn responses, then your modem is working.

Hi. Modem Properties>Diagnostics shows "Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem"
on COM 1 Interrupt 4. Clicking "more info" says "The modem failed to
respond. Make sure it's properly connected and turned on". COM 4 has
no modem installed.

well it is pretty simple if there are no drivers for 98 then you can't use
it with 98.
you might try ebay for a USB courier v.everything pci modem I know they work
with 98.

I have just noticed a response to this same multiposted question in
another group which states that the SMBus *is* supported in Win98, but
that drivers need to be provided by the motherboard manufacturer.

See http://smbus.org/specs/smbus_driver_ext_arch10.pdf

Try Everest, and look under Devices:pCI to see if the card is
visible. (Everest is the program formerly known as AIDA32, and
the most recent non-free versions can be purchased from
Lavalys.com.)

Had a similar problem back when.......the modem & win procomm were
being used successfully & then procomm no longer see the modem; same
with the win98se packaged version. win98se diagnostic see the modem
as the response was good (it sends a 'at'); reload new driver but
nada.

As my need was urgent at that time, I loaded my good old DOS Qmodem
& it worked!. Later on, the only solution I could find/do was just
to re-install m$'s crappy windows 98se.

A few of days later, my boss came to me for advice regarding the same
problem he had at home with his own computer & win98se; unfortunately,
my 1st response was just to laugh........didn't go over too well....

I still have my old external zoom moden & Qmodem, just in case...

Try here. Probably need to register first, but I've done so and used
this site safely for several years. Best driver-site I've ever found--even
shows "bootleg drivers" that will still work w/non-bootleg hardware. If you
find 'joy', please respect their request and feedback what worked--that
builds confidence for others who visit the site later.
Luck to you. sdlomi2

At last, the answer. You just havent got the driver for it, you been
looking in the wrong places.

Google for: "modem name" driver download and pick a driver for it that
works on 98 and has been reviewed and rated as functioning. Probably
from the above mentioned site.

Now, uninstall your yellow q mark and restart. When it asks for a
driver, point it to what you dled.

Note a minority of drivers are exe files, and instead of the above you
just run the exe.

If you dont find a 98 driver - and you will - try a 95 one, or Me, or
if all else fails 3.1 drivers often work on 98.

And finally, if no joy you can google for the numbers on the main
chips, and a driver for another modem type based on the same chipset
will normally work.

Hi. Thanks..I'll try that site for drivers. Progress report: I tried
the downloaded Trendnet modem driver & the generic Win modem
driver...but no change. I also downloaded the chipset installation
software utility from Intel for the ICH5...and it got rid of the
yellow question mark on PCI system management bus in Device Manager.
Whoo hoo! :) ...but still no modem. I also tried moving the card to
another PCI socket...no effect. I've also installed the freebie
version of Everest, and it in fact, pointed to the ICH5 chip as
requesting the driver & causing the yellow question mark.
Anyway, thanks all! I'll try any appropriate drivers I can find on
that site & if I still can't get it working, I think I'll look for a
nearby dealer who carries the Asrock AMR modem...on the hope that
since it's an option for this mb, compatability should be ok. Thanks
again!!!

Can you please satisfy my curiosity and tell me what files are
identified when you go to DM -> SMBus -> Properties -> Driver?

If you do get stuck and go for another modem, just ask around and
you'll find loads of slung out pci modems. No reason to buy one, hasnt
been for a few years now.

You updated the chipset drivers. Good.

A PCI Modem should work fine. You might do better with a
non-win PCI modem. Might have some 3com or USR FS. Inquire
healer2k at excite dot com.

Be careful if you are using a hard drive larger than 137GB
Data corruption.

Otherwise 98se with updates is still quite a useful product.
Drawback is newer software versions are designed for 2000/xp.
